Best Stays | Escaping the Urban Frenzy: Arcana's Transformative Retreats in Nature
Discover Arcana, a serene sanctuary where nature and tranquility merge to create a peaceful haven. Escape the demands of city life and reconnect with your inner self in this harmonious, calming environment.
Arcana, an innovative wellness project by Felicia Snyder and Alan Gertner of Tokyo Smoke, is redefining the way we connect with nature. Born from the need to counter the stress of modern urban living, Arcana offers private, nature-immersive getaways designed to rejuvenate the mind and body.
With a mission to reconnect city dwellers with the healing power of nature, Arcana provides carefully curated experiences backed by scientific research and educational resources. To celebrate the launch of its spring initiative, Arcana is unveiling a limited number of exclusive stays in three breathtaking wilderness cabins. These cabins, thoughtfully designed to blend seamlessly with their surroundings, offer guests unique well-being rituals that promise a deeply restorative experience.
Just two hours from Toronto's bustling city center, Arcana invites you to escape into a serene deciduous forest. Here, guests are immersed in ever-changing natural beauty, depending on the season. Whether you're hiking along the 15 kilometers of trails, unwinding in the sauna, taking a refreshing cold plunge, or simply soaking in the views from your cabin, every aspect of your stay is crafted to foster a profound connection with nature.
Sustainability is at the core of the Arcana experience. Designed by Michael Leckie of Leckie Studio, the cabins embody Arcana’s philosophy of wellness through nature immersion. "We incorporate biophilic design principles to blur the lines between the built and natural environments," Leckie explains. "This approach is essential for wellness, whether in remote or urban settings—perhaps even more so in the latter."
The cabins' reflective stainless steel exteriors seamlessly mirror the surrounding forest, creating a striking yet harmonious architectural statement. Environmental consciousness extends beyond aesthetics; to protect local wildlife, the design team developed a bird-friendly film to prevent collisions with the mirrored surfaces.
Inside, the cabins are a sanctuary of calm. Large windows frame the lush landscape, inviting quiet reflection. The interiors, predominantly crafted from maple and red cedar, exude warmth and serenity. Modern amenities—like a queen-sized bed, a fully equipped kitchen, and an ergonomic bathroom—ensure comfort without compromising the connection to nature.
Arcana’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond design. "We’re constantly exploring ways to reduce our impact, from reintroducing indigenous plant species to carefully selecting construction materials," says Snyder. The guest experience is intentionally self-directed, yet thoughtfully guided through design, language, and strategic wayfinding.
A key highlight of the Arcana experience is the Sound Journey, a 50-minute meditation developed with Woom Center and The Dojo Upstate. Played through Sonos speakers on either side of the bed, the journey uses guided meditation, overtone-emitting instruments, and breathwork to center the mind and body. For those seeking a peaceful night's sleep, a sleep journey is also available. Guests can further immerse themselves in the Analog Pavilion, a cozy space with a wood-burning fireplace, a curated vinyl selection, and self-serve tea.
Toronto-based artist Celia Lee recently discovered the transformative power of Arcana during a stay that revitalized her creative process. Far removed from the noise and chaos of her Toronto studio, the tranquil environment of Arcana became a fresh canvas for Lee, inspiring her to experiment with new materials and techniques. "Being at Arcana felt like a completely clean slate. It enhanced my practice by teaching me to work with what was around me," she reflects—a sentiment that resonates with all who visit.
Culinary experiences at Arcana are equally considered, with meals crafted by chefs from the renowned Bruce Wine Bar. The cabin’s coffee ritual invites guests to slow down and savor the moment, using a hand grinder and pour-over setup with coffee from Good Grief, a local roaster in Thornbury. Alternatively, guests can enjoy loose-leaf oolong tea from Collingwood's Grow Tea Company, founded by an Arcana team member. To complete the sensory journey, a selection of apothecary products from Sangre de Fruta is provided.
Arcana’s contemporary cabins offer more than just a place to stay—they present an opportunity to escape the everyday hustle and reconnect with nature in a deeply meaningful way. By marrying sustainability with stunning design and comfort, Arcana is redefining what a nature retreat can be, ensuring that your time in the wilderness is as restorative as it is memorable. For those seeking adventure, relaxation, and a renewed connection to the natural world, Arcana promises a transformative experience like no other.
